Dexter and the Moonrocks’ Debut Hit ‘Sad in Carolina’ Tops Alternative Airplay Chart

Billboard

Dexter and the Moonrocks’ first entry on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart, “Sad in Carolina,” rises a spot to No. 1 on the Dec. 7-dated ranking.

“Sad in Carolina” is the Texas rockers’ first song on any Billboard chart. They’re the second act to earn a first Alternative Airplay No. 1 in 2024, following Myles Smith, whose “Stargazing” topped the Sept. 28-dated survey, and the first band with an introductory leader since Bad Omens ruled with “Just Pretend” in September 2023.

“In an industry that seemed to have momentarily turned away from rock, we felt a strong undercurrent – a shift back towards the authentic sounds of guitars and raw attitude. Dexter and The Moonrocks struck a chord with us immediately. While being influenced by greats like Nirvana and Kings Of Leon, they’re a bridge to the future of rock, blending influences from rock legends and contemporaries like Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Colter Wall. Their sound is the DNA of Severance Records – rediscovering and redefining rock with a fresh perspective, especially with a nod to Southern roots.” - Steve-O Robertson

The popularization of the y’allternative aesthetic coincides with a rise in rock and alternative-country music listening among Gen Zers. Alt-country in particular has been having a moment over the past few years, with the rise of artists like Turnpike Troubadours and Dexter and the Moonrocks. These bands and others combine country roots with alternative-rock to pioneer a new sound. Given the resurgence of pop-punk music in the mainstream, it only makes sense that y’allternative would become a popular spinoff of the trending sounds. - C.S. Harper
